Poiana Stampei House Museum

The door is low and you have to stoop. From the threshold, the smell tells you where you are: old wood, lime wash, wool and smoke long gone out in the hearth.

The House Museum in Poiana Stampei is not a collection moved into a building. It is a homestead kept as it was lived in, every object where it did its work.

Room by room

The first room holds the hearth, with clay pots and dishes on the shelves and everything needed to cook a meal and keep the house warm. This is where the family sat, and where the stories were told.

The good room is another world: a high bed, embroidered cloths, icons on the walls, rugs with large flowers in red on black, and the dowry chest. Inside the chest lie the costumes — shirts with embroidered shoulder panels, woven aprons, sheepskin waistcoats — sewn through the patience of winter and brought out for feast days.

The houses here kept tools most people think forgotten: the loom, the distaff, the hemp brake, coopering tools. They are whole, and on the big days they are set in motion again.

The museum that wakes up

A few times a year the house stops being a museum. On Maundy Thursday, eggs are painted and food is cooked as it was before Easter. At the Farmers' Ball and at the „Flori de pe Dorna” national festival, the village comes out in costume, and the children learn the steps from those who danced them all their lives.

The folk dress of Poiana Stampei is among the richest in Bukovina — not because it sits behind glass, but because it is worn.

Getting there

The house stands in the centre of Poiana Stampei village, a few steps from the national road, sharing a yard with the park and the playground. Visits are guided, and the time is arranged with the town hall — the opening hours depend on the people who unlock the door, not on a timetable nailed to the wall.
