„Acoperământul Maicii Domnului” Monastery

You see it first from a distance: a wooden bell tower 60 metres high, shaped like a truncated pyramid, with a sharp turret at the top and a clock on its face, standing above the valley. It marks the entrance to a group of buildings with orange roofs, on the left bank of the Bistrița, a few metres from the water, below Bârnărel hill.

The monastery „Acoperământul Maicii Domnului” — the Protection of the Mother of God — is in the village of Gheorghițeni, some 5 kilometres from Vatra Dornei, on the road towards Piatra Neamț. The community settled here in 1999, and the oak church, built in the Maramureș manner, went up between 1999 and 2000. Apart from the stairs and the foundations, all of it is wood: the buildings and the tower alike.

The tower and the bells

The tower was built between 2002 and 2004 and holds 24 bells, the largest of them weighing 5 tonnes, together with a carillon. It is lit at night and, in clear weather, can be made out from Vatra Dornei itself. A metal cross stands at the top, outlined against the sky above the valley.

From the air you see best how it all sits: the bell tower in front, the buildings to either side, the road passing before them, the river behind, and above them the pasture climbing the hill. The wooded hill closes off the view, and the valley opens out to the right.

The painting and the consecration

The Byzantine painting inside the church was done in 2004 by the team of Valentina Petrescu. The monastery was consecrated on 20 October 2004 by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I together with Patriarch Teoctist.

The patronal feast falls on 1 October, the Protection of the Mother of God. Having been raised in the early 2000s, the monastery is not a listed historic monument — there is none on the national list anywhere in the commune.

Getting there

Come on the DN17B from Vatra Dornei, about 5 kilometres along the Bistrița valley, as far as the village of Gheorghițeni; the bell tower is visible from the road, so you cannot drive past it. You also come level with it from the centre of the commune, keeping to the same bank, a few minutes by car.

Before you go

This is a working monastery, not a museum piece: dress modestly, keep your voice down, and ask before photographing inside or putting up a drone. There is no published visiting timetable, so fit your visit around the services rather than the other way round. If you come for the patronal feast in early October, expect crowds and little room to park along the national road.
