„Sfânta Seară de Crăciun” Christmas Show

Carols, winter customs, cheerful turns and folk theatre, with the folk groups of Poiana Stampei and the neighbouring communes, in the „Elisei Todașcă” Cultural House.

Annual event
Casa de Cultură „Elisei Todașcă”, Poiana Stampei, județul Suceava

On Christmas evening the hall of the Poiana Stampei Cultural House runs out of seats. The people of the commune come, so do the sons of the village back from abroad for the holidays, and tourists staying in the Dorna basin.

„Sfânta Seară de Crăciun” — Holy Christmas Eve — is the show with which the commune opens its holidays: carols, winter customs and traditions, cheerful turns and folk theatre, performed by the folk groups of Poiana Stampei and the neighbouring communes.

What you will hear on stage

The programme follows the thread of the feast: carol and traditional music recitals, folk dances, folk theatre sketches. The commune's choir, the local ensembles and guests from across the county take the stage.

This is where the folk dress shows best. Embroidered shirts, woven aprons, sheepskin waistcoats, goat and bear masks — all taken out of the dowry chests for this one evening.

Why it matters

The event carries the name of Elisei Todașcă, the man who started it, and the commune's Cultural House bears his name too. For years now it has been the place where the village gathers before sitting down to the Christmas table: the carols are passed on, the children learn the steps from those who danced them all their lives, and those who left come back for this evening.

When and where

25 December, 7 p.m., in the performance hall of the „Elisei Todașcă” Cultural House in Poiana Stampei. Admission is free. Come early — the hall fills up.
